A brief history of Wells Hospital

You can see some historic pictures of the opening of the original hospital in 1910 in our Gallery area.

1910 Wells Cottage Hospital built by the estate of the Earl of Leicester supplying all the health needs of the community including major surgery.
1948 Wells Hospital absorbed into the NHS on its formation together with most independent hospitals in the UK. Inpatient intermediate care unit with up to 15 beds staffed by NHS nurses and GPs.
2004 Hospital inpatient beds closed by NHS although physiotherapy continues. An immediate campaign 'Save Wells Hospital' begins.
2006 Following an NHS public consultation, the task of developing Wells Hospital 'with beds' is awarded to Wells Hospital and Hospice Charitable Trust. (WHHT)
2006 September 1st Wells Community Hospital, operated by the Trust under license, opens with a wide spectrum of ambulatory services.
2006 Operating company is formed (now Wells Hospital Management Limited) as a CLG and social enterprise. Directors appointed from the local community. A business plan for a hospital with beds is written and submitted to PCT with request for Community Hospital Fund support.
2007 - 2008 NHS services sought for hospital - partnership slowed by reorganisation of NHS Norfolk.
2007 WCH highly commended in East of England Health and Social Care awards for collaborative work with Queen Elizabeth Kings Lynn Hospital.
2008 Strategic Health Authority support won for project team to work towards conclusion of original aims.
2009 Spring Project team and Wells Hospital to report to NHS Norfolk medical executive and Board.
2010 March Outline Business Case accepted by NHS Medical Executive and Board, (Mermaid Appeal) begins.

Freehold of hospital land and buildings transferred to WCH Charitable Trust.
2011 July Norfolk Dialysis at the Mermaid Centre opens.
2013 Jan Wells Town Council Offices - Open within the hospital.
2014 May Official opening of Wells Community Hospital Trust's Dementia friendly gardens and Dementia Hub - offering support and activities for those living with Dementia
2015 Plans for the intermediate bedded unit on land adjacent to the hospital continue to move forward.
2015 June Legends Hair Salon opens for business.
2015 Aug Acupuncture, Chinese & Complementary Treatments - Opens weekly clinic.
2015 Nov NHS Norfolk Deaf Association- offers free services, repairs and battery supplies clinic.
2016 Feb NHS Sexual Health Services Expanded- C Card - Registration Point for young adults.
2016 April NHS Physiotherapy re-launches weekly clinic on Mondays.
2016 July First Annual Dog Show & Family Fun Day Fundraiser - Organised By Val Baxter
2016 Sep  Joy Of Food- Begin free funded cookery courses to promote healthy living.
2016 Nov Osteopath Service opens weekly clinic.
2016 Dec NHS Wellbeing service opens weekly counselling service on Thursdays.
2017 Feb WCHT welcomes it's new General Manager, Samantha Taylor to the team.
2017 March Postage stamp collecting in aid of "Hearing Dogs For The Deaf" begins.
2017 April  Nelson's Shantymen choose WCHT as their 2017 charity.
2017 Nov NHS Health Visitor for children begins monthly service.
2017 Dec Slimming World starts new weekly evening programme on Tuesdays.
2018 Jan WCHT launches it's new website
2018 Jan Training Hub - New courses added and the refurbishment of our existing training centre for First Aid, Food Hygiene, Safeguarding and much more..
2018 Feb Africian Drumming to join the Dementia Hub Weekly Curriculum.
2018 March Seated Exercise Classes - Commence weekly on Thursdays.
2018 June Becomes a "Dog Friendly" establishment.
 2018 Sep New Bluestone Reflexoloy joins the team at WCHT. Providing holisitc footcare on Mondays.
2018 Sep Wells NCI Coast Watch Start Monthy Meetings at WCHT.
 2018 Sep Wells Nelson Club Joins WCHT every 1st & 3rd Thursday Monthly, Social Club for over 70's.
 2018 Oct Wells Men's Shed Start Monthly Meetings at WCHT, Persuing practical interests together.
